Innovation seems a fairly distant concept in heavy music as of late. Hardcore punk certainly is a beaten track, and it would seem that re-creation of the ‘glory years’ or just following the rest is the norm. Perhaps it’s the attempt that matters. Perhaps we have all simply heard so much music that the basis for what’s heavy or affective is constantly slimming. One thing that can be said of STRANGERS is that they are still trying.
Whether or not they will achieve this with their first full-length, Weight, is for the listener to decide. The record certainly builds on the aggressive and confrontational style hinted at in the 4-song demo “Holding” (which sold out completely in weeks). But Weight is also an album of maturity and progression that expands from the simple scope of pure aggression. Juxtaposing the speed and passion of d-beat influenced tracks like “Meursault Blues” and “Holding” is a real sensitivity to texture and dynamic, exemplified in a range of ways – from the midpaced and depressive plod of “You Crawl” to the unshackled and ephemeral fury of tracks like “With Faces” and “Expositions”; all of which show a desire to strip back to the basics of the rock genre.
All in all, maybe punk rock has had its day for shocking the listener, and the future is one of reshaping the past into new forms. While no band can claim to rise above their own musical influences, STRANGERS certainly aim to keep pushing that envelope into new and unsettling areas.
The album was recorded and mixed with Troy Kelly at STL Audio in Wellington and mastered by none other than James Plotkin (Khanate, ISIS, Pelican, OLD).

Wellington group STRANGERS have almost finished their first full-length album, "Weight", which is due for NZ release in mid-August.

Without giving away too much just yet, the record certainly builds on the aggressive and confrontational style hinted at in the 4-song demo "Holding" (which sold out completely in weeks). 1. We have to pull out of the show at Happy on the 14th because...

2. We are currently in pre-production for our full-length, which we will start laying down in about 3 weeks, aiming for a June release. It is tentatively titled "Weight". It will have ten tracks and is being recorded with Troy at STL Audio in Wellington.

4. The "Holding" demo is now completely out of press (though Real Groovy stores and Upsett Records in Hamilton may still have some copies), so don't email to ask if you can get one.

So Hamtown Smakdown has just been, and it was bizarre to say the least. Still, we had an 'interesting' time and hopefully some people dug it (though we are of course heathen hessian scum fr00ts from the capital city of Gayz and Fagz). We have some new shirts as well which will go up on the site to mailorder within the week. As listed below, we are playing an excellent show on Thursday at Valve, Wellington; with 3 awesome bands - DIAL, THE WRONGMEN and KNIFE FIGHT. You should try and be there!
Here is an interview recently done for Dehumanize Zine #2 which you should pick up when it comes out this week. I muse on everything from XXXSTRAIGHTXXXEDGEXXX to my current bedside books (kill me...):

What was the inspiration behind the change of direction/name from Guest Stabs Host to Strangers?
I think basically the old name was tied to an era of songs, music and lyrics that didn't really apply any more, so it sort of marked the beginning of a new identity - conceptually and musically. It was important to get a new name as well in the sense that we wanted a name that didn't give a pre-emptive notion about how the music was going to sound or what the ideas behind the band were, so it’s something a bit more ambiguous and more interpretable.

How has the addition of Mike and Kalem affected the dynamics of the band?
Mike’s been with us for a year now so the new era of music hasn't really changed much with his input; although he's writing most the material now which is really a welcome change. With Kalem on bass, it’s given us an opportunity to explore new ideas and sounds, and his critical input is a bit more directed. As well as that I think he adds a new dimension to the live performance because he has such an investment in the music, and I think it manifests itself more in the way we play live.

There’s some pretty in-depth lyrics throughout the 'Holding' Demo, What influences the lyrics for Strangers? How much importance do the lyrics have compared to your music?
Well, I place a lot of value on writing lyrics. I think they are an important part of the identity of the band as well as reflecting conceptual aspects of the music. In terms of influences, I suppose on a general level there is a consistent theme of questioning the preconceived ideas about the way people are supposed to live, and looking at the individual’s place and role in greater society in terms of the individual’s relation to the world itself. I’m interested in questioning a lot of the roles that have been pre-determined; in terms of creativity, sexuality, morality… there are a lot of restrictive norms that exist almost solely based on tradition (mostly religious…) and leave us alienated. I guess it’s mostly about examining that alienation as being an inherent part of existing.
I suppose I’m influenced by a variety of other lyricists and writers; ranging from French writers like Céline and Gide to Americans like Bukowski and Ginsberg and a lot more in between. There are a lot of great lyricists in punk and beyond too… people like Chris Colohan, David Bazan, Scott Walker etc etc etc…

What books have you been reading lately?
I’ve just been reading a lot of stuff for my research at uni at the moment, people like Daniel Dennett & Richard Dawkins and so on. I’m also reading “Hunger” by Knut Hamsun.

How have your views of straight edge changed between the time you became straight edge untill now?
I used to think that it meant something important but I realise now that it doesn’t... it’s just one of those things that I ‘do’ like taking a shit or buying a cup of coffee…

You used to be a christian and now you an athiest, what has changed?
I guess a re-evaluation of myself and my own views about life in general. Previously I may have been seduced by a few ideas sort of tied to social aspects of life, like the ‘community’ - it gives you the idea that you can get easy answers to a lot of impossible questions. But thank fucking jeezus I learned to think for myself, and through a revaluation of things I came to realise that atheism is a liberating lack of delusion that opens you up to reality and lets you confront the real problems with the world and yourself, rather than just passing it off as the will of A Big Man In The Sky.

Who are your favourite New Zealand bands?
The Wrongmen, Dial, Scab, Kill the Fake Patient, Brick vs Face, Black Boned Angel, Birchville Cat Motel, Knife Fight.

What touring plans have you got for 2007?
We're doing a bunch of shows on the Wrongmen tour in March and April, and then after we have finished our cd in May/June or so we will be touring the whole country again. I’d love to be playing in another country by the end of the year.

When do you start recording the cd and who is recording it for you?
We're not 100% on who will be recording it; we’re just inquiring with a couple of studios at the moment in Wellington we should start recording within a month.

What releases have you got planned for Action Man Records for 2007?
Next up is the Wrongmen 7" and then after that there will be a Damaged cdep, the Strangers full length and probably a Wrongmen full length as well as a couple of other projects that I can’t really say much about yet.

Is Action Man Records going as well as you thought it would?
I haven’t ever really had any ideas about how well it was going to go or anything like that, it’s all sort of happened bit by bit and there has been no real greater plan for everything. I think that over the last year or so my goals have gotten a lot more salient and a lot more defined, with more thorough quality control on what I put out. The future is just going to be a case of taking things as they come, but now I have more detailed plans and a better distribution deal signed, and a lot more ideas regarding promo and distribution so hopefully things will continue improving. Maybe I’ll even ‘crack the market’…

Lastly, it looks like we will be hitting the studio this month to start recording the new album. The tracklist and title will be unveiled in the coming fortnight.

"From Action Man Records comes the latest output from New Zealand’s Strangers (formerly known as Guest Stabs Host) in the form of this absolutely raging four-track CD-R demo, “Holding”. The band’s style is a curious blend of harsh, chaotic, dissonant metallic textures with an energetic backbone of fast-paced hardcore/punk rhythms - all fronted by blown-out shouting/screaming. And it’s honestly more creative than that description might indicate, because these dudes pack a shitload of riffs into short, energetic compositions that just burst forth and never let up. You’ll find everything from subtle hints of melody and grinding picking patterns to post-hardcore textures and sludgy/crusty levels of density, among other influences, and the songwriting totally kicks ass. Plus, the recording is solid and the packaging totally rules. The disc is housed in a simple six-panel sleeve printed with a sepia toned aesthetic on matte brown paper, with a clean layout and nice photography to boot. Hell, even the lyrics are fuckin’ great:

I walked the wrong way home the other night and found a friend in the corner of a lane, wounded pride and gutterfucked in the rain. He was hungry and he followed me home. And I was overjoyed for I’d always been alone. Strangers. We saw the pain of life reflected in the light. Seraphs wandering doleful at no great height. Weeks had passed. He grew strong and I was loved again. But desperation! He’d want more but I had none, I saw frustration stir his stance, we parted ways, he took the food and I was left without. But it was fine for I was not alone. The next night I begged him not to let me starve. And he sneered and leapt and tore, all the while he laughed. So I lay bleeding with saliva on my throat. His shadow beckoned over me, and I thanked god for I hadn’t died alone.

This shit is seriously fuckin’ awesome, and I can’t wait for a full-length. The demo’s limited to 200 copies, and I believe most of ‘em were sent out as promos, so… if you want one (and you should), don’t sleep on it"

"STRANGERS are a Wellington band whose sound and line up evolved throughout 2006 by gigging, and, it would seem from their site and press release, self-reflection. This Demo CD presents four songs as an indication of their sound.
So what is that sound? Aggression. Screaming/howling vocals. Thundering drums, with plenty of double bass drumming and double time backbeats. Guitars with absolutely no fat on them at all and no time wasted with solos - or time wasted at all - with the longest track clocking in at 2:45. Super tight arrangements. A taut, intense musical experience.
So, a bold musical statement, and an idiosyncratic one. Is it going to alienate an audience? Well yes. And no. It’s an aggressive sound, and you might not want to be up the front of their live shows or play it to the “olds” but in this music there is brains and musicianship. Listeners with open ears will find real rewards. The best “way in” would be the final song of this CD, 'Teenagers' which is clearly the standout track.Extra credit in three areas:
1) A wonderfully presented CD.
2) Obviously an “organic” sound. Which is intended to mean that the creative process has plainly been musicians playing together to develop it …. One doubts very much if much editing, overdubs or Pro Tools shenanigans have gone on here.
3) The lyrics, reproduced here on the CD cover, are at times extraordinary (best example? Track two 'Holding') It is a shame though - and this is a criticism - that the needs of the sound mean that the lyrics are hard to get without having them in front of you to read. This is especially true when the lyrics are actually worth hearing."

It's been a while, children, but an update is finally here. Now, first useful and useless bit of news is The Band Name Change, aka the worst career move ever; aka totally necessary given circumstances. We're not GSH anymore, thank fucking Satan, and the new name is Strangers. STRANGERS. (rearrange and remove an "r" and you can get "St Angers"; our tribute to The Best Album This Decade). Some sort of statement put it this way:

“With a new line-up and set of songs, we no longer feel that the name GSH (Guest Stabs Host) represents the band in its current form; and the name now only embodies an era of songs and lyrics that have run their course musically and conceptually. Therefore the next logical step is to end that era with a change of the band name. Our new name is: STRANGERS. We hope that this won’t confuse you too much.”

Strangers - 'Teenagers' MP3

It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Otis Chamberlain of the awesome Gomorrah fame. The demo will come packaged as three cardboard inserts with cd attached packaged in a plastic sleeve - should be around $5 or $7. It's being released as an Action Man Records demo.

The site has also been updated with some pictures from our NZ tour with Dial that happened in September/October. It was fucking great; and despite the lows (people forgetting PA bookings, ridiculous inner-city dwelling noise complainers, Nelson, 3am drives from Nelson to Christchurch, closed record shops) there were some great moments (seeing Dial 6 times, millions of bagels, sleepy-chin photos, SEALS, buying records). We will be doing a more comprehensive NZ tour in the first half of 2007, that's a promise.

Finally, here is the poster for the Sept tour with our friends Dial. Below is the poster for a show we are doing with Ulcerate, Gomorrah and Every Man for Himself on September 2nd at Valve in Wellington. Should be a great show, we are all stoked to see Ulcerate with their new line up. We are also playing this weekend (Sat, 26th August) at the Uproar Rehearsal Studio in Newtown, Wellington (cnr Riddiford st and Adelaide rd) with Scab, Workshy and Black Boned Angel. Proceeds go to Punkfest - a great cause - which we will be playing - so come along and support it and see some fucking awesome bands.

Hardcore 06 Festival

Wow. Thanks to everyone who came out to Sharkfest, the show went about as well as it could have, despite the fact that we may have been a little rusty. We look forward to playing as much as we can now.
Speaking of which, in a week we are playing the new Hardcore 06 Fest in Auckland. The poster:-

I don't want to ruin the enigma by attempting to explain their sound so I'll leave that to them. Anyway the dates will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

Hardcore 2006 is coming to New Zealand for the first time this year and we are playing the Saturday night show. Headlining Sunday night is none other than Ringworm, who we are all fans of and are psyched to see live. The details -

It's at 420 on K Road in Auckland. Door sales only, Saturday is $10 and Sunday is $15. We are looking forward to immersing ourselves once again in the suffocating filth of Auckland. We hope to see you there.

Greetings. This blog will be used for all Guest Stabs Host related things and probably general ranting. Please feel free to leave comments as desired, opinions welcomed. You don't need to be a member to do that either.

After almost six months of hiatus for various reasons, GSH will start playing shows again next month. Lots of things have changed since then, and it is now essentially a different band.
We have a new bassist - cockwarming young man named Kalem has replaced dearly dead and departed Simon on the "Bass Guitar". Kalem (or, as he has recently become aliased - "Damaged Man") has been a long-time friend of the band and has served time in The Batstorm and Then I Said Why. He comes equipped with a Ratt pedal and a general misanthropy, and he has slotted nicely into the band. It now looks like this -

We have six new songs and a cover and will still be playing "Groundhog Day" but everything else rests in shitty graves so don't ask us to play it.
Our first show back will be at "Sharkfest" in Wellington, with numerous other buddies ranging from our good Auckland friends The Wrongmen to Wellington destroyers Scab and Tauranga's most notorious and negative pessimist band Brick vs Face. We hope you will come along and check us and the rest of the bands out - venues haven't been confirmed just yet but it promises to be an exciting two-night festival! I'll post details on here as they become available.

We are hoping to have two things ready for the show - firstly a lyric zine detailing all the new rantings, hopefully presented in a quality that could be described as "vaguely desirable". This will have a few illustrations and other things courtesy of various people including the legendary Richie Burns, an ex-member, great artist, and good friend.
Secondly we will be printing new shirts, although no date can be confirmed for the finalized production of said shirts. The design is a luxurious three-colour print, done by the extremely awesome Thomas Casey, a notable young man with some good skills. You can contact him with donations/fuck-offerings to t_sacs@hotmail.com. Prints are detailed below but aren't of the quality you can expect on the finished product - the internet requires sacrifices!

The brown shirt will use bronze ink whereas the blue shirt will be done in silver. Again, more info coming soon.
